What is the Difference?

Our sled dog race

... is unique in showcasing both lightning-fast sprint teams—short bursts of high-speed excitement—and the endurance of mid-distance racers, tackling longer courses at a steady pace. These dog-powered events not only celebrate the heart of sled dog racing but also shine a spotlight on the Iron River area and all it has to offer in the winter season.

The Northern Pines Sled Dog Race is more than just a competition—it’s a family-friendly celebration filled with thrills, community spirit, and unforgettable moments for both professional and recreational mushers. We invite you to bundle up, bring your family and friends, and join us on race day to cheer on the teams and be part of the excitement!

The event is free

... to come and watch, with excellent viewing spots both on the Event Center grounds and along the trail route. Between races, spectators can step into the heated viewing area to warm up, grab a hot drink, and enjoy a bite to eat. Event apparel and merchandise will be available, along with a variety of goods from local vendors—adding to the lively, winter-festival feel.

The Northern Pines Sled Dog Race attracts mushers from across the country, turning Iron River into a hub of excitement and world-class competition. With nearly 2,000 spectators expected this year, the trails will be buzzing with energy as families, friends, and fans come together to celebrate the dogs, the mushers, and the joy of winter in the Northwoods.

The four racing divisions include:

4 Dog (4.4 miles) Class. Weaving through the mature pine plantations on a trail developed for beginner dog mushers.

6 Dog (8.2 miles) Class. A More detailed trail system for the experienced musher.

10 Dog (17 miles) Class. Weaving through the pines and hardwoods of Northern Wisconsin, be sure to bring your GoPro camera and hold on TIGHT!

Mid-Distance (32 Miles) Class. A detailed trail system for the experienced musher and a test of physical endurance for both the dogs and driver.
